Explore Gaping Gill Cave: Rare Public Opening Announced

Prepare for an unforgettable adventure as Gaping Gill, one of Britain’s best-kept secrets, opens its doors to the public. This remarkable cave, nestled near Ingleborough Cave in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, offers a rare opportunity for intrepid explorers to delve into its mysteries.

Twice a year, Gaping Gill unveils its awe-inspiring wonders, revealing a labyrinthine network of passages and chambers that stretch beneath the surface. Dating back centuries, this natural marvel has captured the imaginations of adventurers since its discovery.

Experience the thrill of descending into the depths of Gaping Gill, where the echoes of history reverberate through its rocky corridors. As you journey into the unknown, you’ll uncover a world unlike any other, illuminated by the soft glow of your torchlight.

One of the highlights of the Gaping Gill experience is the Fell Beck stream. This stream pours over the rocks above and crashes to the cave floor, creating a stunning waterfall. For the duration of the public opening, the stream is temporarily diverted by a makeshift dam, allowing visitors to safely explore the cavern.

Press Association photographer Danny Lawson, who had the privilege of a sneak peek by being lowered 110 meters into the cave, described the experience as “massively impressive.” He remarked, “It’s a completely surreal experience as you descend into the abyss. It’s pitch black at first before your eyes gradually adjust. And it’s like an echo chamber so you can hear the water running nearby. It’s massively impressive.”

Gaping Gill will next open to the public from May 27 to 31. Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to explore one of Britain’s natural wonders.
